Notes: "ROBERT STRAHORN, Chicago, the dean of stockyards commission merchants, both in years and period of business career, died at his residence, 4935 Washington Ave., yesterday afternoon. He was 76 years old. His death was just one year after that of his wife, who came to Chicago as his bride fifty years ago. Mrs. Strahorn died May 25, 1902, and since her death her husband had grown perceptibly weaker. Coming here from Ohio in 1853 (probably 1855 -Ed) Mr. Strahorn became one of the commission merchants in the old Sherman stockyards, then located at State and 22nd Streets. From that time he was actively interested in the commission business in Chicago, and for years has been regarded as an authority by the younger men of the yards. He was born in Wayne County, Pa. (no, actually West Buffalo Township, Union County, Pennsylvania -Ed.) leaving there for Ohio when a boy. In 1853 he married Julia Murdock, and leaves one son, Harry C. Strahorn, who was associated with him in business. Until two years ago Mr. Strahorn had no partners in business. Then he established the Strahorn-Hutton-Evans company, of which he was president at his death. The funeral will be held Friday, the burial being in Oakwoods. He was a member of the Home Masonic Lodge." -Chicago Daily Tribune, May 27, 1903. Robert married Juliet MURDOCK 1853, Newark, Licking, Ohio. 8. | Robert STRAYHORN was born Abt 1733, Ayrshire, Scotland; died Aft 1820, Chester, Pennsylvania. Other Events:
Notes: According to the Biographical History of Chester and Delaware Counties by Cope and Ashmeade (the copy I have seen was entitled Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Chester and Delaware Counties -Ed) published in 1901, Vol 2, page 394, "Robert Strahorn was a Scottish dissenter, who left his native land in order to escape religious persecution, and landed in America in April 1775, about the time of the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. He enlisted three times in the Continental Army, serving through the entire war, and never receiving a wound. He participated in some of the most memorable events which marked the struggle for independence, and was a sharer in many of the greatest of the hardships which fell to the lot of the devoted patriot army. He accompanied Washington when the latter, on that never-to-be-forgotten Christmas night, crossed the Delaware in order to surprise the Hessians at Trenton, and he shared all the sufferings of the winter at Valley Forge. Robert brought his two sons, Nathaniel and Samuel with him to America in 1775." (Most arrival records recorded males over sixteen years old, so Margaret was likely not recorded -Ed.) 9. | FNU LNU Notes: She was definitely not Margaret Ross. Notes: No birth records, thus no mother(s), have been found for Samuel and Nathaniel Strayhorn, and the birth record for Margaret does not name her parents.
