The most distinctive feature of the building is its roof structure, which resembles a ship, which likely resulted in the name of the church. The structure has sometimes been identified as hammerbeam roof, which it is not. | ||

This image is consistent with this story, and shows John and his father George, with George Jr. being the likely photographer. This is probably the start of the trip, as there are corrals and gear visible. | ||

At this time, Christopher was living on his farm in present-day Rouzerville, which was a scant 1/8 mile off the Great Wagon Road.
